Gifts That Keep on Giving

Becca and I are not buying gifts for each other this year. We have enough.

In lieu of gifts to each other this holiday season, we would like to give back to someone else who needs “stuff” far more than we do right now. Perhaps inspired by the legend of Duke of Bohemia, Saint Wenceless, properly warned by O Henry’s The Gift of The Magi, or, simply moved by the everyday saints who work at shelters and support those who are less fortunate…Becca and I will forego heaps of the uneccessary in order to make the neccessary more achievable for a few others. Becca and I will sponsor gifts for guests of the Womens Lunch Place, a daytime community for poor and homeless women in Boston that is open 6 days a week.

For those, like my wife and I, who are counting their blessings and looking for ways to bring the giving back to “gift giving”, I have prepared a list of five worthy organizations or means here to get you started. However, how you choose to affect change and make contributions to eachother (and the world) is a very personal venture. If you do not find something here to inspire you, I hope you will continue the pursuit.

  1. The Womens Lunch Place, Holiday Giving Program. This program is incredibly important to the WLP guests. Some sleep on the streets or in shelters and the WLP is where they come to feel a sense of home. Many of them wouldn’t receive anything this holiday season. Other members of the WLP community receive very small disability, social security, or transitional assistance checks and can’t afford basic necessities. They have turned to the WLP hoping that the organization can help provide gifts for their children or grandchildren. If you are interested in being matched with a family (or families) or would like to contribute gift cards to our Holiday Giving Program, you can emailHolidayGiving@womenslunchplace.org or you can call 617-267-1722 X 15.
  2. Give More for Less this Holiday Season withwww.BiddingForGood.com. This site has great DEALS on all the hottest gifts for everyone on your list. You can browse By Auction to support your favorite causes or choose the Closing Soon to bid on auctions that are closing soon. So get going and bid on fantastic deals before it’s too late.

  3. The Breast Cancer Site

Click to Give Sites. Whether you click to give free mamogramschild healthcarebooks, to protect endangered habitatfood and care to animal rescue organizations, or toeradicate world hunger, don’t forget that you can (and should) also click on the sponsors who support these causes. I have found some great deals on gifts that just feel good on some of these sites, from shirts to bags to accessories and jewelry, there is something for everyone (including your four footed furry friends).

  4. Discover a world of difference at Ten Thousand Villages. The good folks at Ten Thousand Villages work with over 120 artisan groups in more than 30 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America to bring consumers fair trade jewelry, home decor, gifts and more. As one of the world’s oldest and largest fair trade organizations, Ten Thousand Villages builds long-term relationships with artisans that are based on mutual understanding and respect. Fair trade enables artisans to earn a fair wage and provides the opportunity for a better quality of life. Find a store near you or shop online atwww.tenthousandvillages.com.
  5. Make a Wish. Your holiday gifts can help make wishes come true. Check out these special items that benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation®. Everyone on your list will appreciate your thoughtfulness – and so will each of the courageous children who benefit. The nation’s largest wish-granting organization. Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation® has given hope, strength and joy to children with life-threatening medical conditions. From our humble beginnings with one boy’s wish to be a police officer, we’ve evolved into an organization that grants a child’s wish in the U.S. every 40 minutes.”

As Thanksgiving approaches, each of us can find great delight and connect to the meaning of the season in searching for gifts that can make a positive impact in our world. Consider using this as an opportunity to teach your children about the importance of giving. Inspire a friend. Or just discover the joy you receive from giving to others.
